Flue design
Charles Pearce provide a full flue design service in London working with heating and ventilation engineers to specify the means by which gasses and fumes are expelled from the property. This includes Flue systems, Fans, Controls, Combustion Air requirements. Some clients are looking for a fully integrated system to work within a home management system. Charles Pearce liaise with third parties to facilitate this.
Whether the property is using a Natural Gas or Solid Fuel, the flue routes, access points where necessary, requirements for fan assisted extraction all need to be carefully considered. In addition, all Document J and Building Regulations need to be met with regards the exit points; this can have a direct impact at Planning Permission stage as final building heights are often affected.
All these systems usually require integration with the workings of the fireplace and cabling routes, gas supplies, access points should be carefully designed so as not to impact on the final Interior Design of the Property.
Fireplace design and execution
Fireplace Design to Execution
Charles Pearce have worked with the leading engineers, architects and designers to provide fireplace drawings and fireplace design input to ensure that the fireplaces and their build environment are the best they can be.
Fireplace designs are developed from a blank sheet or Charles Pearce work with the concepts of architects and designers, advising on bringing the designs to fruition, to ensure that the fireplaces work and conform to the standards of the Country. Materials such as metal, leather and stone have been used in Charles Pearce designs.
Fireplaces need to comply with Document J and the design of the fireplace chamber and structure is as important as the fire surround design to get right. Different rules apply to gas fires and solid fuel fires. Each element from the fire back to the hearth, the gather to the surrounding construction all need to be properly designed to be compliant.

Fireplace Design to Execution
Selecting the right fireplace for the project can be very time consuming and the temptation is to go to a single company to provide the solution. There are literally hundreds of companies providing a very wide selection of styles of chimney pieces, baskets, fire backs, stoves etc.
At Charles Pearce we help you narrow down your search for the chimney pieces not the companies so you can be sure to place the right piece for each room in a project regardless of how many different surrounds you may need.
We can provide ‘mood boards’ based on a particular period or style and we will introduce you to companies and options you are unlikely to use unless you spend your days researching fireplace companies.
Fireplace and flue surveys
Why fireplace and flue surveys are needed
In existing buildings it is vital to understand the current status of the existing flues. In order to establish the final fireplace design and opening sizes a survey will need to be carried out and a report provided.
What you are aiming to establish is:
Flue Size
Flue Route
Flue Condition – relined, broken, feathered
Flue Status – removed, blocked, partially blocked or open
This process requires one or more of the following actions:
Opening up of the fireplace if boarded up or covered
Cleaning
CCTV surveys
Flexitrace (running cables down the flue and tracking via receivers).
Ground Penetrating Radar – used to scan walls to establish routes and locations.
Smoke Tests
This crucial information is used to decide the best way of making these existing flues operational in the context of their intended future use.
